American Will Further Evaluate BAE Anti-Missile Technology for DHS
Bloomberg is reporting that BAE Systems will further evaluate its anti-missile technology on American
Airlines flights in April after winning a contract from the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security (DHS).
According to
Bloomberg.com, a DHS spokeswoman said BAE was awarded $5 million for the
project, but also said that the full contract needed to be signed.
Assuming the contract's formal completion, American would further evaluate BAE's JETEYE anti-MANPADS
(man portable air defense systems) infrared laser jamming device on flights
between New York and Los Angeles. American has already
assessed
the system on a not-in-service B-767 during an earlier phase of the
DHS's MANPADS protection program.
Northrop Grumman has been testing its similar DIRCM (directional infrared
countermeasure) airborne system technology, called Guardian, on nine FedEx
MD-10s as part of the same DHS program. 12-19-2007. |
