American Airlines to Test AirCell's Broadband Connectivity
American Airlines will begin testing AirCell's high-speed broadband connectivity for
passengers on its B-767-200s that fly primarily fly transcontinental routes in
2008.
Dan Garton, American's executive vice president for marketing, said the carrier is
undertaking the evaluation because it believes some of its customers –
especially business customers, want to use their PDAs (personal digital
assistants) for real-time communications while in flight.
AirCell's system will provide
American's passengers with a high-speed Internet connection in all classes of
the aircraft for a fee. If the connectivity evaluation is successful, the
airline says it will consider extending the capability to the rest of its
domestic fleet.
American's 767 installations
will consist of three exterior antennas (two on the bottom of the aircraft and
one on top). The signals received inside the cabin will be 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi.
