Airservices Australia Wants Help from Industry to Reduce Delays
Airservices Australia says it wants industry to help find ways to decrease the
number and magnitude of flight delays along Australia's eastern seaboard as a
way to reduce costs and emissions.
The ANSP (air navigation service provider) said its own recent analysis, which was
independently validated, shows delays are costing operators there in excess of
A$70 million ($58 million) per annum.
Airservices Australia CEO, Greg Russell says if industry combines to identify
solutions to these delays, millions of tonnes of emissions could be saved along
with reduced costs and greater schedule efficiency.
To achieve this objective, Airservices is suggesting an aviation industry Capacity
Delay Forum be established comprising airlines, airports, and the Bureau of
Meteorology to identify and implement possible solutions.
Airservices also announced the formation of a National Operations Centre to be
established in Canberra to improve coordination of air traffic management which
is becoming increasingly important as the number of flights continues to grow
and greater efficiency is demanded by airline customers. The Centre will become
the key driver of Airservices' air traffic control monitoring and performance
measurement capability.
Mr. Russell said, "Higher economic growth in the Asia Pacific means this region should outstrip North
America in terms of passenger traffic within the next three years," and that
"Growth of this magnitude needs to be carefully managed. It must involve
airports, airlines and Airservices working more closely together." 09-10-2007. |
