Airservices Australia Says RNP Trial Reduced Emissions at Brisbane
A new Airservices Australia report says enhanced flight paths, based on RNP (required
navigation performance), have reduced aircraft carbon emissions by 650 tonnes during a trial at Brisbane.
The trial, dubbed the "Brisbane Green Project," intended to show how RNP (required
navigation performance) approach and departure procedures could be integrated
into a busy airport environment.
Airservices Australia worked with Qantas, Naverus, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority
of Australia (CASA) on the project. Qantas pioneered the use of RNP procedures
in Australia, which were designed with the help of Naverus.
According to the report, the trial produced the following results in its first 12 months:
-
An
estimated cumulative savings of 4,200 minutes in flight time and 17,300
nautical miles in distance flown.
-
An estimated 200 tonnes of cumulative fuel burn savings.
-
An estimated 650 tonnes reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
The report was released at the recent ATC Global conference in
The Netherlands. A copy can be found
