Airservices Australia Commissioning Five More ADS-B Stations

Airservices Australia is about to commission five new ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast) ground stations over in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, which will fill in much of its continental coverage of upper airspace.

The new stations at Karratha and Billabong (near Kalbarri) in Western Australia, and at Alice Springs will be commissioned on July 9th and at Broome and Tennant Creek on August 2nd.  The new ADS-B stations will provide surveillance coverage to ground level around the tourism hotspots of Broome, Karratha and Alice Springs, in addition to their higher level coverage.

According to Airservices Chief Executive Officer Greg Russell, hundreds of aircraft operating in Australia are already equipped with ADS-B technology and are approved to its services today.  "For example, 400 ADS-B approved flights per month transit overhead or land at Broome, and more than 500 at Alice Springs - and all will benefit as we expand our ADS-B coverage to these remote areas," Mr. Russell said.

Mr. Russell added that Airservices expects to complete a nationwide rollout of ADS-B coverage in upper airspace by the end of 2008.  06-30-2007.
