Airbus Expands Contract with AVTECH for SESAR Work
Airbus has extended and
expanded its contract with AVTECH Sweden for assistance on its work on
Eurocontrol's SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research Programme).
AVTECH has developed a
set of computer simulation tools for designing new operational procedures
that can increase runway capacity and reduce fuel burn and resulting
emissions as well as noise similar to what was achieved at Stockholm Arlanda
with its
Green Approach Project, which uses an airplane's FMS (flight management
system), connected to air traffic control via datalink, to strategically
accomplish four-dimensional, continuous-descent arrivals. The current target
is to reduce negative environmental effects by 10% for each individual
flight.
Patrick Manzi, AVTECH's
simulation domain leader, says the challenge is to operate each flight as
efficiently as possible, and only constrain it when needed to achieve
overall optimization.
Increasing capacity is
another important part of the SESAR effort, which also is seeking to
triple European air traffic capacity by 2020.
AVTECH established a
Toulouse office in 2006 to support Airbus's SESAR efforts. 03-29-2007. |
