ARINC: VDL Mode 2 Now Has More Than 2,200 Aircraft Users
ARINC says more than 2,200
individual aircraft use VDL (VHF digital link) Mode 2 datalink communications,
about 2,000 of which are flown by 40 airlines and 200 by the military. VDL Mode
2 usage has been rising sharply since 2004, according to ARINC.
Steve Means, vice president
of ARINC Aviation Solutions, said, "We are now handling 3 million VDL messages a
month, and 90% of the growth has taken place in just three years. We're logging
80 new tail numbers a month as well."
Today, most commercial
aircraft are delivered with VDL avionics as standard equipment, ARINC says.
VDL-2 provides expanded
bandwidth - ten times that of ACARS (aircraft communications addressing and
reporting system) - which not only provides more channel capacity needed for ATC
and AOC (airline or aircraft operational control), but allows a whole new range
of applications, including graphical weather, electronic charts, and
engine/aircraft health monitoring programs. VDL Mode 2 also supports traditional
ACARS data link applications via a hybrid service known as AOA, or ACARS over
AVLC (aviation VHF link control).
Importantly, VDL-2 also can
support CPDLC (controller-pilot data link communications), which has been in use
since 2004 at Eurocontrol's Maastricht Upper Air Center as part of Europe's Link
2000+ program, and can do the same for the FAA's NexGen (next generation air
transportation system) as that evolves. 06-23-2007. |
