ARINC Introducing a Wireless Onboard Sales Device for Airlines
ARINC is introducing a wireless data communications module designed to support portable onboard sales
and credit card transactions for airlines. It might be used for other in-flight
applications as well.
The ARINC MCG (mobile communications gateway) provides wireless connectivity and a recharging power
source for in-flight electronic devices, allowing airline crews to download
sales data from several portable units simultaneously in a single session. Point-of-sale devices can be left on board the plane for recharging, and receive
wireless inventory uploads over the MCG as well.
The MCG doesn't rely on airport infrastructure, so it may be permanently left on
board an aircraft and can be used even at airports
without Wi-Fi service.
The MCG is the first on-board communications device to offer this capability, ARINC says.
ARINC plans to announce flight trials of the MCG system with cooperating airlines that use the Abanco In-Flight payment system. Abanco and ARINC signed a marketing and
reseller agreement last month.
Several airlines have suggested new ways to apply the technology, and ARINC says it will likely
announce other possible airline applications for the device in the near future.
